In Orphans, the two brothers go it alone. The only connection each has is to the other, until Harold comes along. The connection they form becomes the substance of the play.
The connections we make can change our lives. Connection, trust, looks so easy for some. But for those of us who've been overwhelmed by isolation at times...we will see ourselves in each of these characters.
Meeting, talking to other individuals may be easy, but what qualifies a connection with another human being? Connections can be fleeting, too. There one moment; next moment changed into something less recognizable, more formal, the closeness dissipated. It's hard to tell how strong a connection others feel to us. Insecurity begins to creep in.
To accomplish things in life, to feel the meaning of humanness, we must trust in others, and dare to connect with them in meaningful ways. That's a lesson for me to learn as I undertake this process, and, I believe, one of the main lessons of Orphans.
